Self Care: The Doorway Back to Yourself

Afro-Caribbean woman with eyes closed surrounded by chakra-inspired symbols with a tropical landscape and palm tree doorway behind her, painting symbolizing self-care and inner balance.

Before this painting became the SELF CARE card in La Caribeña Oracle Deck, it had another name.

I originally called it “Balance y Energía.”

At the time, I was thinking about the delicate dance between rest, healing, and the energy we give to the world. That feeling of trying to stay centered while life pulls us in a hundred directions.

In the painting, a woman sits quietly with her eyes closed, completely at peace. Around her are symbols inspired by the chakras, representing the flow of energy through the body. Behind her stretches a lush tropical landscape, anchored by a tall palm tree.

And if you look closely, something unexpected appears in the trunk of that palm tree.

A door.

When that image appeared in the painting, it felt important. Almost like a quiet message from the work itself.

Self-care is a doorway.

Not something indulgent or selfish, but a passage that leads you back to yourself.

In a world that often celebrates exhaustion and constant productivity, choosing to rest can feel radical. Choosing to care for your body, your spirit, your creativity, and your energy can feel like swimming against the current.

But every time we pause, breathe, and tend to ourselves, we step through that doorway again.

Back into alignment.

Back into balance.

Back into our own energy.

That’s the spirit of this painting.

Self-care isn’t about escaping life. It’s about returning to it with more clarity, presence, and love.
