Lineage: The Strength We Carry

Lineage is a painting about the quiet power passed through generations of women.

In the piece, three figures stand together — grandmother, mother, and daughter — with new life growing in the daughter’s belly. Each woman has wings. They all share the ability to fly, but their wings are different, representing the unique gifts and strengths each generation carries.

While working on this painting, I kept thinking about how we often talk about inheriting generational trauma — but we also inherit blessings. We inherit creativity, resilience, wisdom, and ways of seeing the world that come from the people who came before us.

As the daughter of immigrants, living with one foot here and one back in the Dominican Republic, I feel that deeply. The strength and imagination passed down from my family and ancestors have shaped who I am and the work I create.

At the base of the painting are small nods to the Caribbean — a papaya, flowers, and the coquí frog — reminders of the Caribbean culture that continue to live in my bones.

This artwork also appears on the FAMILY card of La Caribeña Oracle Deck, where it represents the bonds, talents, and wisdom that flow through generations.

To me, Lineage is a reminder that we are not starting from scratch. We are building on something sacred that came before us.
